With so many pasta shapes and sizes available, it's easy to create a tasty meal starring pasta. It's a perfect starter ingredient to combine with your favorite seasonings and sauces.

Pasta can be made from scratch or bought in a local grocery store. Barilla brand pasta is carried by most stores and is a good choice for dry pasta. Here are some types of pasta shapes:

Healthier Baking With Olive Oil

Olive oil adds a delicious taste to breads, cakes and muffins. For moist and flavorful bakery, use a mild olive oil as a replacement for butter or margarine. This mono-unsaturated fat is cholesterol free and an integral part of the Mediterranean diet.

To make the switch to healthy baking, use the conversion chart below.

Olive Oil Tips

If you're confused about the different colors, prices and names of the olive oils you see on your grocer's shelves, here's a few tips to take some of the mystery out of one of the Italian cook's mainstays.

Different varieties, soil, climate and the method by which the fruit is processed are all factors in the flavor and quality of the oils you see on the grocer's shelve. The oil may be very pale gold to a deep, almost jade green. The color isn't an indicator of the quality of the product, and a manufacturer's product may vary from year to year, depending on the crop.

You should try out a number of oils to find one that pleases your palate. Sicilian oils have a fruity flavor while oils from Tuscany are very light. There are also good oils from Greece, France, Spain and the U.S. Regardless, you should choose a product that is labeled 100 percent olive oil and is pressed where it is grown.

Store your olive oil in a dark, cool place. You may want to decant a small amount into a glass or ceramic container for everyday use, but don't use plastic as it can alter the flavor of the oil. Don't store olive oil in the refrigerator, as the oil will thicken and be hard to pour.

Extra Virgin

Extra Virgin olive oil is the first pressing of the fruit, without heat or further processing. The oil is made from the finest, handpicked olives and is considered to be the finest quality oil.

Use this oil for salad dressing or other delicate uncooked dishes to appreciate the subtle flavor. Extra Virgin olive oil has a lower smoking point, so it's not the best choice for frying. It's also the most costly of the grades of olive oil.

Superfine, Virgin And Fine Virgin

These grades of oil are less costly than Extra Virgin, and they are good for everyday uses. They have a higher smoking point, so they are good for frying. These oils tend to have a full-bodied flavor that works well with spicy foods, robust sauces and meat dishes.
